Every lead type agents actually buy, with published price ranges, typical close rates, and what each one works out to per closed policy.
"How much do insurance leads cost" has no single answer, because the word "lead" covers products that differ by four orders of magnitude. A live transfer can cost $160. A record on an aged data list costs about a penny and a half. Both get called a lead.
Below is every type agents actually buy, with the price ranges published across the industry in 2026, and — more usefully — what each works out to per closed policy, which is the only number that pays you.
| Lead type | Price each | Typical close rate | Implied cost per policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live transfer | $45–$160 | 15–30% | ~$375 |
| Exclusive real-time web lead | $20–$60 | 8–20% | ~$285 |
| Shared web lead | $8–$30 | 5–15% | $150 on paper; $400–$800 reported |
| Self-generated Facebook lead | $15–$80 effective | 5–15% | ~$300+, plus your time |
| Aged web lead (30–90 day form fill) | $0.50–$3 | 1–3% | ~$100 |
| Aged data list | $0.015 | 0.1–0.3% reply, then your funnel | ~$65 |
Ranges for transfers, web leads and Facebook are published 2026 industry figures and vary widely by vertical and state. The aged-data row uses our own funnel assumptions, shown in full below. Every number here is a planning estimate, not a promise.
A $0.015 record and a $120 transfer are not the same unit of anything. One is a phone number attached to a person who has never heard of you. The other is a human being already talking to you. Comparing their sticker prices tells you nothing.
The number that matters is total spend divided by policies bound. Run that math and the ranking changes completely: the cheapest lead per unit is often competitive per deal, and the most expensive lead per unit is rarely the worst per deal. Every quoted price above is incomplete. Budget for these too:
No hand-waving — this is the whole calculation for a 10,000-lead SMS campaign, and every input is adjustable in our ROI calculator:
Often. If you have no texting platform, no 10DLC registration, and no follow-up process, aged data will sit in a spreadsheet and return nothing, while a $120 transfer puts someone on your phone this afternoon. If you are brand new, twenty pre-qualified conversations teach you more than ten thousand cold records. And on lines where a single case pays four figures, almost any per-lead price is rational. Cheap data rewards systems and volume; it punishes agents who buy it and hope.
This is the most important paragraph on the page. Aged data records are not consented insurance-form leads, carry no TCPA express consent, and are not DNC-scrubbed when we deliver them. Before you contact anyone on an aged list you are responsible for scrubbing against the National and applicable state Do-Not-Call registries, registering your 10DLC campaign with your SMS provider, and honoring every opt-out permanently. Budget for the scrub — it runs a few dollars per thousand records and it is not optional. Our walkthrough is here: how to DNC scrub an aged lead list. None of this is legal advice; talk to your own compliance counsel.
It depends entirely on the type. Published 2026 ranges put live transfers at $45 to $160 each, exclusive real-time web leads at $20 to $60, shared web leads at $8 to $30, aged web form fills at $0.50 to $3, and aged data records at about $0.015. Cost per closed policy compresses that range dramatically — roughly $65 to $400 across most types.
Aged data lists are the cheapest per record by a wide margin, at around $0.015 per lead in bulk. They are only cheap per closed deal if you text or dial them systematically at volume, since response rates run a fraction of a percent rather than the double digits you would expect from a real-time form fill.
You are buying reach rather than intent. A real-time lead is someone who asked for a quote in the last few minutes, and that urgency carries a large premium. An aged record is the same consumer 30 to 90 days later, with no active request attached. The data did not get worse; the urgency premium expired.
Texting costs about $0.012 per segment and typically exceeds the cost of the data itself on a bulk campaign. Add DNC scrubbing at a few dollars per thousand records, 10DLC registration with your SMS provider, dialer or CRM seats at $30 to $150 per user per month, and your own time, which is the largest uncosted input in every lead type.
They are worth it if you have a system: an SMS platform, a registered 10DLC campaign, a DNC scrub, and a follow-up process. Without those, cheap data returns nothing and a more expensive pre-qualified lead is the better buy. The price advantage only converts into a cost-per-deal advantage at volume with consistent follow-up.
